Summer is all about soaking up the sun at the pool, beach, an outdoor concert or at a day party with a couple of friends at a bar with an outdoor patio. But, it’s also a great time to enjoy a good theatrical performance as well.
If you’re a D.C. resident, you know how amazing D.C. theatre can be. There are plenty of performance theatres around D.C. and their 2016-2017 seasons are quickly approaching, from the Studio Theatre to the Woolly Mammoth.
If you love theatre and are hungry for some great performances before the full seasons come to D.C. in September, here are two must-see productions coming just for the month of August:
Keegan Theatre
The Lonesome West is a dark Irish comedy written by Academy Award-Winning writer/director Martin McDonagh, where two brothers dispute over their inheritance left by their deceased father. Oh, and there’s a rumor that one of them murdered their father over a haircut related incident. Yikes. Critics described it as “both hilarious and viscerally exciting,” and “one of the great events of the contemporary Irish theatre.” The first show is Aug. 6 and runs until Aug. 27, so make sure to tell your friends and family to grab their tickets early before seats run out quickly! Tickets are $35-$45. Times vary. Click here for more information!
Lansburgh Theatre
The Shakespeare Theatre Company presents Tempest. Prospero, a powerful magician who was overthrown as the Duke of Milan, raises a powerful storm to wreck the vessel of his betrayers onto the shores of a mysterious island. On the island, he takes them through a mysterious dream that starts with vengeance and leads them to reconciliation. Magic, romance and vengeance set the stage at Lansburgh for this classic Shakespearean masterpiece. Tickets are free, so get there early to reserve your seat because they will only have 200 tickets available at the door! Lansburgh suggests getting there four hours before the curtain goes up to ensure a spot. Limit is two tickets per person. The show runs from Aug. 16 to Aug. 28, so be prepared!
